#144 - MARK WALSH - The Meaning Crisis & What Actually Makes a Good Life
Mark Walsh (@walshmark) has spent decades exploring embodiment, coaching, martial arts, meditation and human behaviour. He is the author of multiple books on embodiment, host of The Embodiment Podcast, founder of the Embodied Facilitator Course, and has trained thousands of coaches around the world.
In this episode, Adam and Mark begin with a simple question: if self-help, therapy, yoga, meditation and wellness have become more popular than ever, why do so many people still seem deeply unwell?
Mark argues that the problem may be bigger than anything another book, breathing technique or morning routine can fix. We explore what he calls the modern meaning crisis, the limits of individualism, and why many of the practices we use to “cope” may simply be helping us tolerate ways of living that aren’t particularly good for us in the first place.
From there, the conversation ranges through embodiment, religion, community, parenthood, trauma, coaching and what it actually means to live a good life.
We discuss…
Why the self-help industry keeps growing while people still struggle
The modern meaning crisis
Whether wellness practices sometimes help us tolerate unhealthy lives
Material success vs human flourishing
Embodiment as an antidote to living entirely in the head
Mark’s “four connections”: body, belonging, biome and belief
Why community may matter more than individual optimisation
Mark’s return to Catholicism after years in yoga, meditation and embodiment
The difference between spirituality and belonging to a tradition
Psychedelics, altered states and the need for structure and integration
Trauma, safety and rebuilding personal agency
Why trying to make the entire world “safe” may not actually create resilience
What embodiment coaching looks like in practical terms
Coaching vs therapy vs mentorship
Purpose, relationships, pleasure and transcendence
What Mark believes makes a genuinely good life
A wide-ranging conversation about embodiment, meaning and whether the answer to modern unhappiness might require something deeper than simply getting better at managing ourselves.
